If you’re thinking of flashing a custom ROM on your Samsung Galaxy Note 2, you need to root it first. Rooting means giving yourself administrator permissions on the device. On this page I’ll list instructions to root all variants of Samsung Galaxy Note 2, which are N7100, N7105, SHV-E250K, SHV-E250L, SHV-E250S, SPH-L900, SGH-I317, SGH-I317M, SGH-T889.
The process of rooting your Note 2 is an easy process. But still, things can go wrong if you’re not paying attention to details.
If you’re rooting a device for the first time, things may sounds little complicated. So take your time and go easy about it. It’s not hard as it sounds. I’m going to use the safest rooting method I found for this tutorial. You’ll need a PC and very basic computer skill for this method. So let’s get started.
We will be using CF-Auto-Root by Chainfire for this tutorial. Download CF-Auto-Root for your device by clicking your Note’s model number from below.
N7100 | N7105 | SHV-E250K | SHV-E250L | SHV-E250S | SPH-L900 | SGH-I317 | SGH-I317M | SGH-T889
Now create a new folder on your desktop and extract the downloaded zip file into it. You’ll see five files inside. Now leave it there for a moment and download and install Samsung USB drivers on your PC. You might have to restart your PC after that.
Once it’s done, go back to the extracted folder and run Odin3 v3.07.exe as an administrator. It means you need to right click on the file and select run as administrator. Also the Odin3 version number may be different for your package.
Now leave Odin3 open and turn off your Note 2. You need to put your Note 2 into download mode. After phone is completely turned off, Press and hold volume down key, home button and then the power button for about 5 seconds. It’ll restart your phone in download mode and you’ll see a warning straight up. Press volume up key to get pass that and you’ll be in download mode.
Now in Odin3 click PDA button and select the file with .tar.md5 extension from the extracted files. Then connect your Note 2 to PC with a USB cable. If you did everything as I said up to this point, the color of ID:COM box in Odin3 will change like this.
If you see the color change, click start button from the bottom. It’ll take a minute or less to root your device and once it’s done, you’ll see “PASS” appear in the box above ID:COM. And it means your device is successfully rooted!
